RECREATION HAIKU BOOKLET
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
Based on a haiku, develop a small booklet that effectively conveys the message with figurative imagery. Ensuring that each page contains a balanced and cohesive kit of visual design elements.
HAIKU INTERPRETATION
I understood the haiku as conveying themes of rebirth and reincarnation following death. Although it deals with the more serious concept of death, the imagery it invokes is pleasant and warm.
CHOSEN HAIKU:
"Being the dead man’s spirit
I will go to the summer field
For a recreation"
written by Katsushika Hokusai
SKETCH IDEATION
I started by sketching three concepts for each two-page spread of the booklet. From these sketches, I selected the designs that best and most abstractly conveyed the message to advance to the color application stage.
COLOR EXPERIMENTS
When choosing a color palette to move forward with, it's important to consider how it would convey the themes outlined in my interpretation of the haiku. Overall, the one with red and yellow accent colors most effectively emphasizes rebirth and death.
COLORIZED SKETCH
Digital re-creations of the most effective sketches, along with the implementation of the color palette I chose. These were created in mobile art software, with the text being drawn out.
DIGITAL ITERATIONS
I limited myself to a simple toolkit of lines, circles, and rectangles, with a focus on creating balanced compositions that abstractly reflect each aspect of my chosen haiku. Each spread has an idea in mind, but its abstract imagery allows for varied interpretations
CHOSEN COLOR PALETTE
I selected a black and white palette as a base, using red and yellow as accents. Yellow represents transition and rebirth, while red symbolizes death, yet also embodies the potential for change. Both colors convey themes of transition and transformation, emphasizing the inherent connection and complementarity of life and death.
FINAL BOOKLET
The first spread symbolizes a sunset over a graveyard, with the word "spirit" featuring loose tracking to emphasize the freedom of a spirit. The second spread illustrates the reincarnation process, using winding lines and two colors to represent death and rebirth, while a yellow section may represent a cornfield linking different states of existence. The final spread showcases the completion of rebirth with a circle and parallel lines crossing both pages, suggesting a connection between realities, emphasized by the contrasting colors.
